Syracuse, NY – SRC, Inc. has been awarded a contract from the Environmental Protection Agency for Chemical Review and Evaluation. Under this $20 million, five-year contract, SRC scientists will evaluate the manufacture, use and environmental consequences of new chemical substances entering the U.S. marketplace. They will also develop new scientific methodologies to assess existing chemicals in commercial and consumer products, such as cleaners, and identify safer alternatives.
“SRC is an internationally-recognized leader in toxicology,” stated Paul G. Tremont, president of SRC. “This contract will allow us to apply our advanced scientific assessment methodologies and further develop predictive tools that support the EPA’s pollution prevention principals. Our work will also help to reduce or eliminate toxic substances that may be present in air, soil and water – helping us make progress toward our mission: to keep America safe and strong.”
SRC has a long history of work with the EPA and advancing chemical hazard assessment. The company has supported the agency since 1971 and in that time has evaluated tens of thousands of chemicals to determine their health hazards and how they move and are transformed in the environment. Under this contract, SRC will continue to develop its world-renown computational approaches for estimating physical/chemical properties, toxicity and environmental fate directly from chemical structure. These rapid and cost-effective techniques allow the government and other stakeholders to better understand the potential risks from exposure to chemical products. SRC will also directly support EPA outreach programs that encourage the use of “green chemistry” strategies in the selection of environmentally benign substitutes for products used in homes and workplaces.
