Syracuse, NY, November 24 – Phil Howard, Ph.D. organic chemistry, of SRC, formerly Syracuse Research Corporation, was awarded the 2009 Herb Ward Exceptional Service Award from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Each year, SETAC honors a past or present member who has performed long-term, exceptionally high-quality service to the Society.
“Phil is a valued member of our team and we are proud of his continued success,” stated Bob Roberts, SRC’s president and CEO. “His dedication has brought about further advancements in environmental toxicology and chemistry, and we are excited that his accomplishments are being recognized by SETAC’s Exceptional Service Award.”
Dr. Howard has been a member of SETAC since 1979, serving on the North America Board of Directors for two terms. He also chaired the Society’s North American Finance Committee and the Chemists Committee, and was a member of the Society’s World Council and the World Council’s Finance Committee. He is also the environment chemistry editor for SETAC’s journal, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, and has published more than 30 journal articles on environmental chemistry and biodegradation.
Dr. Howard has been with SRC since 1970, and has managed more than 100 contracts that gather and evaluate chemical fate and environmental and health effects information. He is an expert at developing quantitative structure activity relationships for predicting environmental behavior, and has given numerous lectures and published many articles on this topic. With Environmental Protection Agency support, he directed the development of the Environmental Fate Database. Currently, Dr. Howard is a senior research fellow at SRC.
The Herb Ward Exceptional Service Award is named to honor C.H. Ward, Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry founding and current editor-in-chief, for his contributions to the founding and development of SETAC. The SETAC North America 30th Annual Meeting will take place Nov. 19-23 in New Orleans, La.
