Syracuse, N.Y., April 13 – The grass is always greener at SRC and SRCTec. While the two companies are constantly on the forefront of leading technologies, they are now taking strides to be a leader in their industry in the areas of eco-friendly best practices. This Earth Day, SRC and SRCTec will lead and participate in several events to clean-up the areas in which they live, work and play, including Arlington, Va., San Antonio, Texas, and Syracuse, N.Y.
Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency Earth Day Clean-up, Central New York, April 16
SRC and SRCTec are hosting their Annual Earth Day Litter Clean-Up event on April 16, in conjunction with OCRRA’s regional clean-up. The clean-up competition encourages employees to pick up the area surrounding their headquarters. During the 2009 event, SRC and SRCTec employees collected 744 pounds of trash, and more than 11,800 people from Central New York volunteered through OCRRA to collect trash from roadsides, streams and public spaces. Throughout the region, their efforts brought in more than 137,000 pounds of trash. For more information, visit OCRRA’s Web site.
SRC’s Earth Day at Corporate Square Building, San Antonio, Texas, April 19
SRC’s office in San Antonio is hosting several Earth Day events to promote green practices among their neighbors. Employees will plant a tree at the Corporate Square Building and management is adding new recycling bins to their break rooms. Employees will also be signing a “pledge tree” to state their environmental pledge for the year, whether it be turning off lights when they leave a room or conserving water while brushing their teeth. Lastly, SRC employees will participate in a “Hold a Dirty Sock Contest” to demonstrate how auto emissions affect air quality. Each contestant will hold a clean white sock over their car exhaust pipe while running the engine for 30 seconds – the contestant with the dirtiest sock and the one with the cleanest sock win a gift certificate for a free oil change.
Anacostia Watershed River Clean-up, Washington, D.C. and Maryland, April 24
SRC will join thousands of volunteers and the Anacostia Watershed Society on April 24 to participate in a massive trash cleanup along the shores of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., and several upstream tributaries in Maryland. An Earth Day Celebration will follow the morning clean-up featuring free food, music and exhibits from community organizations. Last year, approximately 2,000 volunteers helped remove more than 60 tons of trash from the Anacostia River. For more information, visit the Anacostia Watershed Society’s Web site.
SRC’s environmental best practices don’t stop there – the 121,000 square foot corporate headquarters in North Syracuse, N.Y., recently achieved LEED® certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Building Certification Institute. The building has advanced lighting technology; an ENERGY STAR® rated roofing membrane; high energy efficient heating and cooling systems; CO2 monitoring; low emitting paints, and carpeting and building materials; prime parking for carpoolers/hybrid vehicles and more.
SRC and SRCTec strongly encourage environmental best practices among its employees throughout the year – not just on Earth day. To start, the company collaborates with Waste Management and OCRRA to recycle bottles and cans, cardboard, construction material, compact discs, batteries, etc. Each employee also has their own recyclable bin at their desks or in their offices. In 2008, SRCTec was ranked as one of the “Top 10 Recyclers” by the CNY Business Exchange. And, SRC and SRCTec both recently received certifications as OCRRA Blue Ribbon Recyclers, a recognition of their great business recycling and waste reduction practices in our community.
The company also has an Environmental Committee to heighten awareness to various green initiatives and other good environmental practices in general. The committee offers seminars, events and speakers to educate employees on how to be eco-conscious in their everyday lives and while at work. SRC employees will also host an Environmental Fair in June.
SRC and SRCTec’s environmentally proactive approach directly aligns with its mission to keep America safe and strong, especially within in the communities in which they live and work. SRC and SRCTec’s employees are very involved in helping the company find ways to increase environmental stewardship – setting the bar for others within its industry and beyond.
