EPI Suite Estimation Software Sold to U.S. EPS:
Available for Free on
EPA Website
Syracuse, NY, August 9, 2001 –
The Environmental
Science Center of Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC) has sold its EPI
SuiteTM Estimation Software to the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). The software can be downloaded for free on the
Internet at
http://www.epa.gov/oppt/exposure/docs/episuitedl.htm.
SRC will
continue to maintain and update the software for the EPA and is licensed
to develop derivative works.
EPI SuiteTM,
or Estimation Program Interface for Windows, is a software and modeling
suite that enables scientists and engineers to estimate physical and
chemical properties, as well as the environmental fate and transport
characteristics of chemicals. Such estimates help in mitigating the risk
of human exposure to chemicals, developing chemicals that are
environmentally friendly, monitoring the degradation of chemicals, and
preventing pollution.
Properties estimated
using EPI SuiteTM are water solubility, octanol/water partition
coefficient, vapor pressure, melting point, boiling point, Henry’s Law
constant (air/water partition coefficient), bioconcentration factor,
soil/sediment adsorption, biodegradation, hydrolysis, and atmospheric
oxidation (www.syrres.com/esc/estsoft.htm). Many of the
programs were developed in collaboration with the EPA’s Office of
Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT). The results from these programs
are further used to model the behavior of chemicals in wastewater
treatment, volatilization from water, and multimedia (air, water, soil,
sediment) partitioning. One of the suite’s programs, the KOWWINTM,
is one of the most accurate estimation methods for octanol/water partition
coefficients. KOWWINTM has had considerable application in
commercial chemical development including pharmaceuticals, and in
pollution prevention. It is anticipated the software will find
considerable use in selecting alternative and new chemicals that are
environmentally friendly.
SRC is offering a
course on October 17-19, 2001, entitled Environmental Fate and Exposure:
Use of the USEPA EPI SuiteTM Estimation Software. For more
information, visit the course web site at
