Syracuse Research Corporation "LEEDS" Central New York's Environmental Efforts

Syracuse, NY, April 16, 2008 – Since opening the new corporate headquarters in early-2007, Syracuse Research Corporation has been making headway on many environmentally-friendly endeavors. Most importantly, they are in the last stages of achieving the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction certification by the U.S. Green Building Council – one of the largest of its kind in Central New York.

Bob Roberts, SRC’s President and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “SRC’s mission to keep America safe and strong by protecting its people, environment, and way of life translates into being environmentally proactive in the communities in which we live, work, and play. We are very accomplished in environmental risk assessments and making recommendations for improved human health related to environmental concerns. One way we strive to ensure our country’s future is to help others realize the damaging environmental impact they can make. Another is to engage the community in efforts like the Earth Day clean-up.”

SRC’s headquarters will be the first and only, to date, building of its size in CNY achieving LEED certification – only 978 buildings worldwide are LEED for New Construction certified. SRC’s 121,000 square foot facility, located at 7502 Round Pound Road, North Syracuse, New York, has the capability to self-sustain for up to 24-hours; utilizes advanced lighting technology and energy efficient heating and cooling systems; and much more. SRC expects to be within the national average savings range for environmentally-friendly construction of $50-$65 per square foot throughout the initial 20-years of the Round Pond Road Facility. Not only has SRC begun the final stages for LEED certification, but it is also qualified for “energy conservation” credits from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

In addition to constructing an eco-friendly headquarters, SRC also strongly encourages environmental best practices among its employees. To start, SRC collaborates with Waste Management and Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency to recycle bottles and cans, cardboard, construction material, compact discs, batteries, etc. Each employee also has their own recyclable bin at their desks or in their offices. SRCTec, Inc., SRC’s high-tech manufacturing subsidiary, is also making waves among CNY’s green elitist. They were recently ranked as one of the “Top 10 Recyclers” by the CNY Business Exchange (February/March 2008), based on statistics and a recommendation from OCRRA for their recycling efforts and improvements made throughout the past year.

“Companies like Syracuse Research Corporation encourage others to make a difference – they show that incorporating environmentally-friendly activities into the workplace is easily achievable. OCRRA particularly salutes the efforts of SRC in improving their bottle and can recycling program in their cafeteria and conference rooms,” said Sarah Stewart, Recycling Specialist at OCRRA.

The company has also recently introduced the Environmental Committee to heighten awareness of “green” initiatives and other best practices that protect the environment, in general. The committee offers seminars, events, and speakers to educate employees on how to be eco-conscious in their everyday lives and while at work. The group also created a Web page on the company intranet to educate employees. Some initiatives of the committee are to offer recycling of ink jet printer cartridges, cell phones, DVDs, MP3 players, and digital cameras. SRC employees will also host an Environmental Fair the day before Earth Day and they will participate in the Annual Earth Day Cleanup on April 26.

Syracuse Research Corporation's Prototype for Lockheed Martin EQ-36 Counterfire Target Aquisition Radar Successful in U.S. Army 360-Degree Mode Testing

Syracuse, NY, April 7, 2008 – Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC)'s radar that is the prototype for Lockheed Martin's Enhanced AN/TPQ-36 counter-fire target acquisition (EQ-36) radar recently completed successful performance testing in 360-degree counter-fire mode against mortars and rockets at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. The prototype radar was developed by SRC under an Army Technology Objective.

Full 360-degree counter-fire tests were performed on the prototype EQ-36 radar; the tests were specifically designed to evaluate the radar's ability to meet U.S. Army requirements outlined in a recent Operation Needs Statement. During the testing, the EQ-36 prototype successfully located the firing positions of both rocket and mortar launchers in 360-degree mode. Live fire testing was conducted over a seven-day period in November and December without a single false alarm.

The Army's new EQ-36 radar eventually will provide the capability to detect, classify, track and determine the location of enemy indirect fire, such as mortars, artillery and rockets in either 90-degree or 360-degree modes. EQ-36 systems will replace aging TPQ-36, TPQ-37 and other Cold War era medium-range radars, which only operate in limited 90-degree modes.

"Testing of the prototype at Yuma has proven that the radar can operate in 360-degree mode, which brings enhanced capabilities to our Soldiers when they are under attack from mortars and rockets," said Bob Roberts, president and chief executive officer of SRC. "We are optimistic that additional testing will further demonstrate the radar's capability and versatility."

"By building on SRC's prototype radar, we've drastically shortened the time it will take to develop and deliver EQ-36 to the warfighter," said Carl Bannar, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin's Radar Systems business. "EQ-36 is about the Soldier ... the sooner we field this solution, the sooner it can start saving lives."

The EQ-36 program remains on a fast track. In January 2007, Lockheed Martin received a contract award for approximately $120 million from the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office - Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors to provide the U.S. Army with five EQ-36 radars within 36 months. Senior Army officials have told Lockheed Martin that the potential exists for the company to provide the Army with more than 180 EQ-36 radars, valued at more than $1.6 billion.

In October, the EQ-36 program completed a successful Preliminary Design Review and Lockheed Martin and SRC debuted the EQ-36 prototype at the Association of the U.S. Army's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Syracuse Research Corporation and Lockheed Martin held the program's Antenna Electronics Critical Design Review (CDR) on schedule the week of January 28. Additional components of the EQ-36 will undergo CDR the week of February 25. Lockheed Martin will deliver the first two EQ-36 systems to the Army by summer 2009; the third and fourth by fall 2009; and the fifth by early 2010.

Syracuse Research Corporation Receives $4.4M Contract for Spiral 3.2 CREW Development

Syracuse, NY, February 6, 2008 – The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Syracuse Research Corporation a $4.4 million contract for the design, development, and delivery of Spiral 3.2 Mounted Counter Radio-Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED) Electronic Warfare (CREW) systems.

Congressman James T. Walsh, a strong supporter of the CREW program, stated, "SRC is at the forefront of solving some of the most daunting challenges facing our troops today. They continue to help grow Central New York’s economy, providing jobs in the technology and manufacturing industries, while also providing the DoD with solutions that are saving lives."

Spiral 3.2 CREW systems are vehicle mounted electronic jammers designed to prevent the initiation of RCIEDs, better known as roadside bombs. This contract is for the rapid development and demonstration of CREW technology and systems to counter the evolving IED threats and provide greater flexibility in meeting the CREW mission. This development will address the worldwide threat as well as the Central Command Area of Responsibility, and the urgent needs identified for emerging threats. The contract will also advance CREW technology and bridge the capability gap between current systems and future systems. The Navy manages the joint CREW program for Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO).

SRC’s products have played a critical role in reducing the number of IEDs detonated in the field. Its first generation Counter Measure Protection System was one of the U.S. Army’s Top 10 Inventions in 2005, and SRC’s “Duke” counter IED system is the Army’s primary CREW system in the field today. Bob Roberts, President and CEO, stated, “We’ve put our top technical minds on the challenge of addressing this problem. Through an internally funded independent research and development project, we were able meet or surpass the technical requirements of this latest request and look forward to providing a system to the military that will continue to save lives.”
